未知的想像的疑謎的盼待的歲月的張照堂，仍在路上。

自二十世紀中期踏上攝影之旅，張照堂的摸索、實驗、記錄與追尋，銘刻出綿長的台灣音像軌跡。

穿越銀鹽相紙、Betacam影帶與電影膠卷，時光繞行於無頭的身影、扭扯的臉、蒼白的手、凝聚的目光，在王船、香客、古厝、月琴的景框與聲響之間冥想迴盪，化身為創作者／觀察者／記述者／漫遊者張照堂。

1943年出生於台北板橋，張照堂從中學時期開啟他的影像探求，在1960年代嘗試推展前衛的視覺藝術表現，並於1970年代起致力於電視紀錄片攝製，拓展台灣影音報導敘事的新路；同時從事電影攝影，投入書寫、編輯、策展和教育工作，對台灣的影像文化發展產生了廣泛影響。

2013年，我們在《攝影之聲》第十期首度製作藝術家專輯〈張照堂專號〉，探看他豐富的創作生涯；隨後於2018年出版他的第一本個人文集《文。張照堂》，集結其涵蓋攝影、音樂、戲劇等多樣的文字書寫。我們的編輯工作與生命曾有幸與他交集共享，即使歲月終歸不居，於2024年遠行⋯⋯

在這份專號中，我們重訪張照堂的作品與手記，咬嚼其耐人尋味的絮語，整理且首次公開他自少年時期以來的習作、印樣、隨筆、塗鴉及文札，聆聽他的心緒與呼喊，並輯錄由林懷民、陳懷恩、曹文傑、劉振祥、吳忠維與張世倫所撰之紀念專文，追憶他們眼中這位藝術家、朋友、導師與父親。此外，於專號隨附了一本小別冊，影像取自張照堂遺留下來、原欲出版的一系列存在某些失誤的照片選輯——他取名為「歲月NG」，在此特別濃縮為一份迷你版本——正是那些意外、失衡、錯置和缺陷，構成了存在。

「藝術，還沒有生活一半那麼有趣。」他在1977年編輯的影像日誌書《生活筆記》中引述。

「用什麼姿勢喝牛奶，用什麼力氣跌倒⋯⋯光一般行走，像影子一般躺下⋯⋯」歲月留下一張字條，「用最後的唇說一聲，我在路上，在路上，在路上⋯⋯」

Through years steeped in mystery, imagination and longing, Chang Chao-Tang remains ever on the road.

Since embarking on his photographic journey in the mid 20th century, Chang’s exploration, experimentation, documentation, and quest have inscribed a long and resonant audiovisual trajectory of Taiwan.

Across gelatin silver prints, Betacam tapes, and film reels, time weaves through headless figures, contorted faces, and arrested gazes, meditating and echoing through sights and sounds of King Boats, pilgrims, old homes, and moon lutes—finally manifesting as Chang, a creator, observer, chronicler, and a flâneur, all at once.

Born in 1943 in Banqiao, Taipei, Chang began his journey of visual exploration while in middle school. He experimented with avant garde visual expression in the 1960s before turning his focus to television documentaries in the 1970s, pioneering new forms of audiovisual storytelling in Taiwan. At the same time, he engaged in cinematography, writing, editing, curating and education, leaving an enduring mark on the development of Taiwan’s visual culture.

In 2013, we dedicated the tenth issue of Voices of Photography to Chang with “The Chang Chao-Tang Issue”, our first ever artist feature, delving into his rich and expansive creative practice. This was followed by the publication of the first collection of his written works, Writings: Chang Chao-Tang, in 2018, which brought together his reflections across photography, music, theatre, and more. We were deeply honored to share moments of editorial work and life alongside him, even as time, ever in motion, carried him on his final journey in 2024…

In this special issue, we revisit Chang’s works and notes, lingering over his thought-provoking words. We are also presenting, for the first time, a compilation of his early photography exercises, contact prints, personal jottings, doodles, and handwritten fragments from his youth, offering glimpses into his inner weather—his moods and silent cries. We have included commemorative essays from Lin Hwai-Min, Chen Huai-En, Tsao Wen-Chieh, Liu Chen-Hsiang, Wu Chung-Wei, and Chang Shih-Lun, who remember Chang as an artist, a friend, a mentor, and a father. In addition, the accompanying booklet features images from a project Chang left behind—a selection of photographs marked by certain imperfections he had once intended to publish under the title “Suìyuè NG” (Time Outtakes) but which was never realized. This mini version distills the spirit behind the project—that it is life’s accidents, imbalances, misplacements, and flaws that shape our very being.

“Art, not even half as interesting as life,” Chang quoted in Life Notes, a photographic daybook he edited in 1977.

“The way one drinks milk, the weight behind one’s fall… to walk like light, to lie down like a shadow…” Time leaves behind a slip of paper. “With one last parting of the lips, a soft whisper: I am on the road, on the road, on the road…”
