“Feeling unfamiliar towards my homeland - Taiwan, I found myself wandering around corners of the city, mostly when the nights had fallen. I didn’t know exactly what kinds of photos I wanted to take. And yet, what attracted me was a certain suppressed force of life, the spiritual intensity behind people, things, and the landscapes.” - Yehlin Lee
Raw Soul is Yehlin Lee’s first photobook. The body of work was taken between 2011 and 2017. Yehlin Lee is a Taiwanese artist based mainly on photography and sound. He first learned how to listen then learned how to watch. He expands the listening experience to the experience of looking by waiting for background noises to disperse, without particular intention to sense the world in order to keep things unpredictable. His silent approach submerges into Taiwanese collective consciousness, which is stored in chaos and confusion.
