"Hanadensha(Flower Car)" were brightly decorated floats in celebration of various events and driven through the streets seen on the streets of Japan from the late Meiji period until the Showa era. They were by all accounts very popular and before the War commemoration postcards were always produced. 21 postcards that are reproduced here are a selection from the collections of Japanese photographer Takehiko Nakafuji and art critic Kotaro Iizawa, each of whom began independently to collect the postcards in the mid-1990s. By way of description in addition to “Hanadensha” some cards read “On the Imperial Accession” and “In Celebration of Reconstruction of the Imperial City”, “Celebration of Year 2,600 of the Modern Epoch”, the Hanadensha were operated for specific events and witness the history of Japan in 19 and 20 centuries.
